Darkest Hour is a historical biography of Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) who became the British Prime Minister from 1940-45. As The Nazi’s were surrounding the beaches of Dunkirk, Churchill had to decide quickly if he was he going negotiate with the enemy or articulate his principals to his own party. What’s interesting at this time it changed the course of history. It also dealt with what would have happen if Hitler’s arrived in Britain?
King George V1 doesn’t think Churchill is a good choice, instead he thinks Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) was better. That’s when Churchill declares his first speech to Parliament to launch a war with the Germans that also includes no peace treaty if that means Halifax and Chamberlain resign their positions.
This is the 1st month of Winston Churchill’s prime ministership. With the war going badly, a rearguard of peaceniks is still trying to get a peace deal with Hitler, despite having been pushed out of power.
This had helped especially during the difficult days of 1940–41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until after the German surrender in 1945.
