Joe Bradley is a reporter from Rome who doesn’t care for his job and he prefers to be back in the United States working for a real news agency. He almost gets fired and misses his interview with Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) who is on a goodwill tour where Rome is her last stop. Than there is a big scoop in London where he calls off his trip to the United States by taking photographs of a drunk woman where she is really taking a sedative and he calms her down.

While Charlie is having his own life that he is struggling with he finds out he has to take care of his brother Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman) who is autistic so they both go on a journey together through understanding and fellowship.
