Other People is about a family that goes through a tragic event in Sacramento, California. Joanne Mulcahey (Molly Shannon) has a form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma and David Mulcahey (Jesse Plemons) had left New York to go to Sacramento to help her mother out after his own struggles in New York both personally and his struggles being a writer for Saturday Night Live. When Chris Kelly casted Molly Shannon in this role it reminded him of his mother where he recalls his own memories of her.
Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a type of soft tissue sarcoma. Soft tissue sarcomas can develop in muscle, fat, blood vessels, or any of the other tissues that support, surround and protect the organs of the body. Leiomyosarcoma is one of the more common types of soft tissue sarcoma to develop in adults.
What makes David and Joanne relationship so riveting is their stories of their own struggles. When you reflect on emotional issues it makes you sad and the words resonate throughout the film and it made me tearful externally and internally.
Why did Joanne mention Austin, Minnesota is it because it is a leading cancer research center institution that operated by the University of Minnesota with significant support from the Mayo Clinic? Did Joanne mention Austin because it is named one of the top affordable small towns where she might want to live? She decided to quit chemo and live her life at home to be with her family and that is an endearing quality about her.
